Thoughts on Teachers

I've been thinking about my first teacher, Elizabeth Morrison Taylor, a lot lately. I first met her when I was 12 years old, and my parents decided to give me singing lessons for my birthday. When I first met her, I fell in love with everything she had to say - and by following her tutelage, I improved exponentially. She taught me about breathing, support, placement, languages, presentation, programming, and how to be a performer. She is one of my hero’s. I studied with her until I left for college when I was 19, and on and off through my 20's whenever I needed a bit of a refresher or a fresh set of ears. I am lucky to have had her as my first mentor. I also refer back to her teachings when I'm teaching my own students now - she is the epitome of a master teacher.

One of the best things that ever happened to me was walking into Liz's studio that day. I can honestly say she changed my life. We are great friends today, and I visit her every chance I get!

Your teacher has the capacity to have a profound impact on your singing and your life. It's really important to find someone who clicks with you, and that you can learn from. Go with your instincts - they're the most important thing. The right teacher will guide you to your instrument, and give you the tools to discover all of your #musicalmojo.
